Boston’s Best: Central Branch, Boston Public Library

The flagship branch of Boston’s Public Library, housed in a stunning historical building with art galleries and architecture from the area's prominent artists, could hardly be considered a hidden gem - it’s impossible to miss! The building was designed as a "palace for the people" and the early supporters ensured that the library would always be "free to all". As such, although many of our Private Boston Tours stop out front, only the Library itself is allowed to run tours inside!

Bates Hall in Boston Public Library

The historic McKim building features three art galleries, including one dedicated to John Singer Sargent. Grab a coffee and sit in the Mediterranean-style courtyard while admiring the controversial "Bacchante and Infant Faun" statue.

Talk to expert historians and explore Boston's history through maps in the Leventhal Map & Education Center. The map center hosts a permanent exhibition of maps and photos from Boston's history. Catch the local radio station live recording in the main lobby of the recently-renovated Johnson Building!
